Ingredients

  • Hamburger Steaks
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 recommended)
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Onion Gravy
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Method

  1. Before You Begin
  2. Preheat and prepare your cookware as needed. Cooking times and results may vary depending on your equipment and ingredients.
  3. In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix just until combined. Form the mixture into 4 evenly sized patties, handling the meat as little as possible.
  4. Heat a large skillet over medium heat with a small amount of oil. Add the patties and cook for 4–5 minutes per side until well browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for about 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and lightly golden.
  6. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir well. Cook for 1–2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  7. Slowly whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Simmer until the gravy thickens.
  8. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet. Spoon the gravy over the patties, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 12–15 minutes, until the patties are fully cooked, no longer pink in the center, and the gravy is hot and bubbling gently.
  9. Remove from heat and serve warm.
  10. Doneness & Safety Cues
  11. Patties should be fully cooked and no longer pink inside.
  12. Onions should be soft and lightly golden.
  13. Gravy should be thickened and hot throughout.
  14. Dish should be served hot.

Notes

• Mix the ground beef gently to keep the patties tender and prevent dense texture.

• Use moderate heat when browning patties so the exterior develops color without burning.

• Cook the onions slowly to allow natural sweetness to develop before building the gravy.

• Stir the flour with the onions briefly to remove the raw flour taste before adding broth.

• Simmer the patties gently in the gravy to keep the meat juicy and the sauce smooth.

Storage

• Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours of cooking.

• Store hamburger steaks and gravy in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Reheating

Stovetop: Warm gently over medium-low heat, adding a small splash of broth if the gravy thickens too much.

Microwave: Heat in short intervals, stirring the gravy between intervals until hot throughout.
