Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch salt
  • Optional Toppings
  • Whipped cream
  • Ice cream
  • Chocolate chips
  • Berries

Method

  1. Before You Begin
  2. Preheat and prepare your cookware as needed. Cooking times and results may vary depending on your microwave wattage, mug size, and ingredient temperature. Use caution when handling hot mugs and steam.
  3. Melt Butter
  4. Place butter in a microwave-safe mug (12–16 oz capacity). Microwave 20–30 seconds or until melted. Carefully remove using a towel or oven mitt, as the mug may become hot.
  5. Mix Cocoa and Sugar
  6. Add cocoa powder and sugar. Stir thoroughly until smooth and no dry pockets remain.
  7. Add Egg and Flavoring
  8. Add egg, vanilla, and salt. Stir very well until the mixture is completely smooth with no visible egg streaks. This ensures the egg cooks evenly and safely during microwaving.
  9. Microwave
  10. Microwave 60–90 seconds.
  11. The brownie is done when:
edges look set and slightly firm
center appears soft but not liquid
surface is no longer glossy or runny
If needed, continue heating in 10-second intervals until fully set. Do not overcook, as microwave power varies.
  12. Rest
  13. Let brownie stand 1–2 minutes. This allows residual heat to finish cooking the egg safely and helps prevent burns from the hot mug.
  14. Serve
  15. Serve warm with desired toppings.

Notes

  • Use a mug that holds at least 12 oz to prevent overflow.
  • Stir batter thoroughly for even cooking.
  • Microwave times vary—check early to avoid overcooking.
  • Do not consume raw batter.
  • Mug and contents will be very hot after microwaving; handle carefully.
  • Ensure brownie is fully set before eating.
  • Refrigerate leftovers promptly and reheat in short intervals until warmed through.
