Ingredients

  • Apple Filling
  • 6 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • ¼ cup dried cranberries (optional)
  • Crisp Topping
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Method

  1. Before You Begin:
  2. Prepare your slow cooker and ingredients as needed. Cooking times and results may vary depending on your equipment and ingredients.
  3. Prepare the apples
  4. Peel, core, and slice the apples. Place them in a large bowl and toss evenly with granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and any optional additions if using.
  5. Layer the slow cooker
  6. Lightly grease a 4–6 quart slow cooker. Spread the apple mixture evenly across the bottom of the slow cooker.
  7. Make the topping
  8. In a separate bowl, combine rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, and melted butter. Mix until a crumbly texture forms. Stir in chopped nuts if desired.
  9. Assemble and cook
  10. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples without pressing it down. Cover and cook on LOW for approximately 4–6 hours, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork. Cooking times may vary depending on slow cooker model and apple thickness.
  11. Finish and serve
  12. Once cooked, carefully remove the lid. For a slightly drier topping, allow steam to escape during the final portion of cooking if needed. Spoon into bowls and serve warm with optional toppings such as vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

  • Cut apples evenly for consistent cooking.
  • LOW heat produces the most even texture.
  • Do not press topping down or it may become dense.
  • Filling thickens slightly as it cools.
  • Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours and store in an airtight container up to 4 days.
  • Reheat gently in the oven or microwave until warmed through before serving.
