Ingredients

  • Patties
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • For Serving
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices cheddar or American cheese
  • 4 tbsp barbecue sauce
  • Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles, bacon

Method

  1. Before You Begin
  2. Preheat and prepare your cookware as needed. Cooking times and results may vary depending on your equipment and heat level. Always cook ground beef until it reaches a safe internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) before serving.
  3. Shape Patties
  4. Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions. Gently shape into patties without overworking the meat. Press a shallow thumbprint into the center and season both sides lightly with salt and pepper.
  5. Preheat Cooking Surface
  6. Heat a grill or stovetop grill pan over medium-high heat. Lightly oil grates or pan if needed to prevent sticking.
  7. Cook Patties Safely
  8. Place patties on the hot surface and cook for 4–5 minutes per side, flipping once, until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) at the thickest part and the centers are fully cooked.
  9. Melt Cheese
  10. During the final minute of cooking, place one slice of cheese on each patty and cover loosely or close the grill lid until melted.
  11. Toast Buns
  12. Place buns cut-side down on the grill or pan and toast for 1–2 minutes, or until lightly golden.
  13. Assemble Burgers
  14. Spread about 1 tablespoon BBQ sauce on each bun. Add the cooked patty and desired toppings such as lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, or bacon.
  15. Serve
  16. Serve immediately while hot for best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Cook burgers to an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) for safe doneness.
  • Avoid pressing patties while cooking to retain juices and tenderness.
  • Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours and store airtight up to 4 days or freeze up to 3 months.
  • Reheat gently until hot throughout before serving.
